ASC-ISR Scholarships for ICPSR Summer School

ASC and ISR are partnering to offer scholarships to attend the Summer Program in Quantitative Methods of Social Research. Application deadline is Friday, April 22.

For the third year in a row, the African Studies Center (ASC) are partnering with U-M’s Institute for Social Research (ISR) to offer 12 full scholarships for participants from Sub-Saharan Africa for participation in the Summer Program in Quantitative Methods of Social Research organized by the Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR).

Eligibility for the ASC-ISR scholarships is based on there being an existing connection between the applicant and U-M, including through the University of Michigan African Presidential Scholars (UMAPS) program. Other Africa-based scholars directly affiliated with ASC, particularly its African Social Research Initiative (ASRI) and (space permitting) other units at U-M, are also eligible for these scholarships. ICPSR offers a generous 50% reduction on the course fee for all other researchers based at Sub-Saharan African institutions.

Practical information about the 2022 ICPSR Summer School

The 2022 ICPSR Summer Program is held in two four-week sessions: June 20 - July 15 and  July 18 - August 12.  Each session offers over 20 different courses/workshops. Courses range from introductory statistical methods to advanced courses such as multivariate modeling, machine learning, and Python programming. See the Overview of the four-week sessions page for more information. ASC-ISR awards will be for either of the two 4-week sessions, but not both.

The program is offered in a hybrid format in 2022, allowing for both in-person and virtual participation and both synchronous and asynchronous participation (helpful for African participants who can avoid participating late at night by watching recorded lectures the next morning). Instructors are experienced in ensuring the full integration of virtual participants into course activities. The ASC-ISR awards cover virtual participation.

Application and review process (Deadline: Friday, April 22)

To be considered for the ASC-ISR award, please send (i) a 1-2 page description of how you would benefit from the courses offered as part of the 2022 ICPSR summer program, (ii) an explanation of your affiliation with U-M (e.g., participation in the UMAPS program), and (iii) an up-to-date copy of your CV. Please send these documents, clearly labeled with your last name, to asc-contact@umich.edu, no later than April 22, 2022, for participation in either the first or the second session.

ASC will review applications for eligibility and make recommendations to the ICPSR team, who will take these recommendations into consideration to select up to 12 candidates who will be able to participate free of charge. Notifications will be sent by no later than early May. Upon notification of your acceptance into the program, you will be asked to register following the instructions provided at that time.
