Pre-Law Academic Advisor
About
What is your advising philosophy? My advising philosophy is to empower students to make informed decisions about their academic and professional goals; as an advisor, it is my responsibility to listen attentively and provide strategic and realistic counsel on how to accomplish them. I am a proponent of professional networking, informational interviewing, and academic exploration early in one’s college career as a way to uncover non-conventional areas of interest. In the same vein, I believe it is also important to provide students with complete information about the professional market, particularly those considering investing in a legal education. My approach is to challenge students to set broad goals, and to take a proactive approach in exploring the spectrum of nuanced specializations the academic and professional realms have to offer.
What was your path to Newnan? I've always enjoyed working with students, but I never anticipated doing so in a professional capacity. After surviving the Hunger Games (some prefer the term "law school"), I clerked for a year at the University of Michigan's Student Legal Services. At the conclusion of my position, I served as the coordinating assistant for the 2014 CSP Summer Bridge Program. While working with the CSP advising office, a position opened with Newnan for a pre-law advisor. This was a great opportunity to marry my experience working with students with my background in law, and to offer guidance from the perspective of someone who has been in their shoes.
What do you enjoy about working in Newnan? The students. The students. The students...and the awesome colleagues.
Class you loved and why? Apocalyptic Themes in Film & Television. I mean, who ISN'T fascinated by all the ways the world could end?? I constantly use this course as an example of taking a class simply because you find the subject matter intriguing, and discovering how its unanticipated lessons fit into the larger picture of your educational experience. This course explored not only the atomic age, contagious outbreaks, the meteor that ends it all, and the zombie apocalypse, but also discussed how we as mankind retain our civility and humanity in the face of our own mortality. The lessons I learned carried over into my legal studies and still stay with me today.
