How do you approach supporting students?
Students need to feel comfortable sharing their academic aspirations, as well as any challenges, and knowing that someone is fully listening to them. I begin each academic advising meeting with a warm smile and a sincere invitation for all questions and concerns to be voiced. Then based on what is shared, we discuss academic recommendations and resources that can support students in their aspirations and potential challenges. And along the journey, encouragement is always offered, whether it be walking alongside during a struggle or celebrating achievement of a goal!
What’s an opportunity you took in college that you’re glad you didn’t miss?
When I was in graduate school at the University of Michigan, I had the opportunity to serve at the University Musical Society (UMS) as a student worker in the production and ticketing departments. Through my work backstage at concerts, or driving performers to and from the airport, I got to meet several world-renowned artists. Often these artists would converse a bit with me, and share tidbits of inspirational words of wisdom. I cherish those memories!
What’s one challenge you experienced in college, and what advice would you give a student facing a similar one now?
I was always a very structured and success-driven student. This served me well academically, but looking back, I wish I had also allowed myself some more opportunities to have fun with friends! Student life needs a healthy balance, and that is something I often ask students about in their advising meetings - whether they are seeking that balance in their own lives!
Have you experienced “culture shock” when traveling to or living in a new place? What helped you navigate that experience and what did you ultimately learn from it?
When I was an undergraduate student, I participated in a summer music festival in Italy. Having the opportunity to study in a different country, feeling the rhythm of life there, and experiencing the food and culture all opened my eyes to new perspectives. I also learned that I can't pre-plan everything, and that practicing flexible thinking is a valuable skill to cultivate!
