The Transcultural Studies program runs two application cycles: one in the fall term and one in the winter term. The fall application cycle is open to juniors and seniors. The winter application cycle is open to juniors only.
Applying to the Program in Transcultural Studies
Applications are submitted to the program using the Transcultural Studies Admissions Application.
The following materials are required as part of the application
- Statement of Purpose - An essay of 2-3 pages explaining your interest in the program, the kinds of questions you would like to pursue, the kinds of graduate courses you would like to take, provisional ideas for a capstone project, and your long-term career goals.
- Writing Sample - Applicants are required to submit one term paper finished for a course in their junior or sophmore year as a writing sample.
- Two Letters of Recommendation - Both letters should be from LSA faculty members, with one of them, from a tenure-track faculty member (Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor) explicitly indicating a willingness to serve as your advisor. Faculty letters should discuss the student’s ability to thrive in and contribute productively to graduate-level courses in participating departments. Letters are requested (and submitted by faculty) through the online application.
- Current Transcript - Applicants must be in good standing in LSA.
- Please follow these instructions to order your transcript in Wolverine Access
- Click on the tile for Academic Records
- Click Order Transcript
- Check the box for Electronic (PDF) Transcript
- Choose the type of transcript you need from the Select Transcript Type pull down menu (select "Official Undergrad/Grad")
- Select the box for "Check if sending to yourself at email above" to send to your umich.edu address
- Click Next at the bottom and then review your order. If correct, click Submit Order
- You'll be notified by email when the order is processed and then another email will follow with a link to a parchment.com website (the online host for the electronic transcript files)
- You will need to follow the steps on the Parchment.com page to get a passcode emailed to you to be allowed to get to the pdf document

Current TCS Students – Applying to Rackham Graduate School
In order to formally register with Rackham, TCS students apply to the Rackham Graduate School at the end of the fall semester of their senior year. All TCS students must complete the Rackham Graduate School online application and pay the application fee.
Before applying to Rackham, we recommend students review Rackham's Checklist for Completing the Application Process to gain an overview of the application process. The Rackham Graduate School requires applicants to submit a personal statement and a CV or resume. Information on statements and formatting requirements is detailed on the Statements and Curriculum Vitae or Resume page of Rackham's website.
