Program Structure & Requirements

Program Structure

The program is structured as a sequential undergraduate-graduate study degree program on the 4+1 AMDP model, enabling current undergraduate students in LSA to earn their MA degree with one additional year of study beyond the BA/BS. Both the core courses and elective curriculum are organized around the three broad and overlapping rubrics of connectivity, comparison, and translation, which together are intended to encompass the various ways scholars in participating disciplines have conceptualized the juxtaposition of languages and cultures.

Degree Requirements

24 credits at the graduate level (including 400-level courses approved for graduate credit). Students will combine TCS courses with other elective courses in relevant departments and related fields chosen from the list of pre-approved courses OR to be chosen in consultation with and approved by the Director of Undergraduate Studies, including

  • TCS 501: Interdisciplinary Approaches to Transcultural Studies I (3 credits)
  • TCS 502: Interdisciplinary Approaches to Transcultural Studies II (3 credits)
  • TCS 599: Transcultural Studies Colloquium (3 credits)
  • Conceptual Foundation Courses: at least one course from each of the three major conceptual rubrics (Connectivity, Comparison, Translation) (9 credits)
