This lecture will discuss two developments that created, and then destroyed, the West African brand-name drug market: Nigeria’s structural adjustment program and the pharmaceutical industry’s turn to speculative capital. It will include an overview of the kinds of markets and drugs that emerged in the aftermath of brand-name industry’s abandonment of the West African market.
Kristin Peterson writes about theories of capital and property; “popular” economies, trade, and markets; health, science, and medicine studies; and postcolonial theory. Her first book is Speculative Markets: Drug Circuits and Derivative Life in Nigeria (Duke University Press, 2014),
