Any student currently enrolled in a U-M graduate or professional degree program is eligible to apply for an STS Graduate Certificate. Applicants need at least a "B" average in their graduate coursework. Applications are accepted beginning the second semester of enrollment in a graduate program and are considered on a rolling basis. Once accepted into the program, students are considered "Candidates" for the Certificate until it is conferred at graduation. Students are welcome–and indeed encouraged–to apply prior to completing the required coursework.
Required Certificate Coursework (12 Total Credits)
- The core STS Graduate Seminar, History/STS 619, SI 719, AC 620, Anthro 658 Knowledge/Power/Practice in Science, Technology, and Medicine, is required. Offered nearly every winter. 3 credits.
- Two electives chosen from the list of pre-approved STS Certificate courses or else approved by the Director of Graduate Studies. (Credit varies; must total at least 6).
- Three semesters' enrollment in STS 571, a one-credit course requiring attendance at STeMS Lectures (occasional Mondays, 4:00-5:30pm).
Up to six of the twelve credit hours may include courses that are required for the student’s graduate or professional degree. Under certain circumstances, the STS Graduate Director may require additional coursework or other preparation or approve an exception to the requirements above.
To apply for a certificate, submit an application form along with the required supporting documents (letter of interest, most recent transcript, and approval from an advisor or faculty mentor).
If you are already enrolled in a graduate program through Rackham, complete Rackham's Add a Degree application along with the Pre-Approval Form for Dual Admission once you have received a letter of acceptance from the program. Note that STS does not require the Dual/Joint Degree Election Form.
If you are not currently enrolled in a Rackham graduate program, complete the Application to Rackham once you have received a letter of acceptance from the program. Neither the Pre-Approval Form for Dual Admission or Dual/Joint Degree Election Form are required for the Application to Rackham. If you are unsure of your Rackham enrollment status, please see the list of graduate and professional degree programs not administered by Rackham.
