The Minor in Science, Technology & Society (STS) focuses on social scientific approaches to science, technology, and medicine, including history, sociology, anthropology, and policy studies. Scientific, technical, and medical analyses of of social problems are also within its scope. This minor is sponsored by the Residential College, but is open to all U-M undergraduates.
The minor helps students learn about such issues as:
- How science, technology, and medicine shape modern societies
- How social and political forces, choices, and values affect science, technology, and medicine
- How the social dynamics of science, technology, and medicine differ among world societies
- How issues of gender, race, and class appear in science, technology, and medicine
STS minors learn multiple methods for studying and solving boundary-spanning problems, including not only traditional discipline-based approaches, but also interdisciplinary and experimental ones.
Prerequisites
None, the minor is open to all University of Michigan undergraduates.
Requirements
A minimum of 15 credits (at least 5 courses), chosen from the list of approved STS courses.
- Meet with the faculty advisor to the STS minor
- Core course (RC SocSci 275/History 285)
- A minimum of 3 courses in a focus track, chosen from the list of approved STS courses
- At least one course must be at the 300 level or above, and only one course may be at the 100 level.
Each student must choose a focus track in consultation with the faculty advisor to the STS minor.
For undergraduate minor advising from September through April, please use the LSA online advising system to schedule an appointment with the STS Undergraduate Advisor. NOTE that non-LSA students do not have access to the online advising system and should plan to email the minor advisor directly to set up a meeting.
