The past decade has witnessed an explosion of trans-disciplinary interest in applying theories from science and technology studies to the study of infrastructures and the built environment in the so-called ‘Global South’. This panel of graduate students in anthropology, history, and urban planning joins a growing effort to question the Global South not as a place on the map, but as a particular set of relationships to governance and technology. Moving across studies from the United States, Jordan, and Senegal, we consider how objects such as generators, humanitarian stoves, cement, and the ‘curb key’ for Detroit’s water system broker the geopolitical imaginary of the global North and South of our times.
