The U-M Science, Technology, and Society Program fosters interdisciplinary teaching and research in the social, historical, and cultural studies of science, technology and medicine. Our nationally recognized faculty produce scholarship and teach courses that bring a humanistic perspective to some of the most important questions at the intersection of science, technology, and society. How do diverse communities establish the truth? How can we govern emerging technologies, from AI to genomics, for a more equitable future?
Through our research, our undergraduate minor, and our graduate certificate program, STS is preparing the next generation of engaged citizens, STEM professionals, and scholars.
With your help, we can expand our reach, offering new training and research opportunities to more students and visiting scholars, and enhancing public engagement through speaker events and conferences.
Your Gifts at Work
“Being a part of the STS Program at the University of Michigan has helped me to think critically about current issues that arise at the intersection of science, technology, and medicine. I like how STS classes have allowed me to take the practical information that I learn in my STEM classes and apply it in broader, societal contexts. As I prepare for Physician Assistant school, I feel more confident in my ability to question the ordinary and recognize the impact that medical knowledge and technologies have on informing our current thinking. STS has helped me to gain a new perspective on the complexities of the technologies that have become so integrated into our society, and it has empowered me to reflect on how this understanding can help me improve healthcare in the future.”
–Emily Wagner, STS Minor and Biology, Health and Society Major
“The STS program has introduced me to scholarship and concepts that have not only cultivated my interests as a student but provided me with new frameworks through which to view and understand the world. It has fostered an inclusive and thriving community of students and scholars from across disciplines to grow with and learn from.”
–Zoe Cullen, STS Certificate Student and Ph.D. Student, School of Information
