The Department of Statistics at the University of Michigan recently hosted 19 prospective students who have expressed interest in the Statistics graduate programs and applied to attend preview weekend. Over the course of approximately two day, the prospective students had a chance to get a feel for the Ann Arbor campus and community, as well as ask questions of current students and faculty and learn all about the opportunities and resources offered by the Statistics Department.

The preview weekend was kicked off on Thursday, November 8 with a group dinner and continued early Friday morning with breakfast before the students were shuttled to campus. Once on campus, the students attended a full day of programming to learn all about the statistics graduate programs.

On Friday, the students attended a kickoff overview meeting, a Graduate Admissions Panel with department faculty, and listened to a guest speaker at the Statistics Seminar Series. They later had lunch with some of our current graduate students, met one-on-one with members of the faculty, asked questions of current students at a Graduate Student Life Panel, and attended a Research Symposium and Reception. On Saturday, the students met for an official campus walking tour, as well as a presentation on Rackham resources and student communities.

The Department of Statistics would like to thank all of the faculty, students, and staff who attended the preview weekend to help us welcome the visiting prospective graduate students. The department would also like to thank the preview weekend attendees, especially those who traveled across the country to visit, for taking the time to get to know our university and department culture.

The Statistics Department is hoping to host Preview Weekend again in 2019. If you’re interested in attending, check back with us this summer for application information.
