On March 18th, 2025, the Our Compelling Interests (OCI) book series celebrated the release of its sixth installment, What Might Be: Confronting Racism to Transform Our Institutions by Susan Sturm at the National Press Club in Washington D.C. The book aims to explain the importance of embedding antiracist practices in our spaces and tips for leaders of every level to encourage full participation from people of all backgrounds.
The panel featured author Susan Sturm, who is also the George M. Jaffin Professor of Law and Social Responsibility and founder of the Center for Institutional and Social Change at Columbia University, in conversation with Freeman Hrabowski, president emeritus of The University of Maryland, Baltimore County. The conversation was moderated by Ted Mitchell, president of the American Council on Education (ACE).
The discussion, co-hosted ACE, centered on higher education institutions and what antiracist leadership can look like through the lens of a student, professor, or institutional leader. You can watch the full discussion, accompanied by an introduction from OCI co-founder Nancy Cantor and an audience Q&A session, below.
