LSA-CARS provides transportation support for community engagement courses. We are currently at capacity and will consider new courses if current courses discontinue the service.
To find out if your request qualifies for future semesters, please consider these requirements.
The course/program:
- Must be in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA).
- Should establish a relationship in the community through regular site visits.
- May not use vehicles, once at the engagement site, for the community partner's programatic purposes.
Instructions for faculty requesting transportation for their course/program:
- Determine if your course meets the above criteria.
- Gather the course details, site location(s), group size, and frequency of travel.
- Contact LSA-CARS Program Administrator (lsa-carsadmin@umich.edu) to discuss a relevant timeline & process. We will add your information to a waitlist.
- Complete a $50 lab fee request form. (Form Help)
- Work with the LSA-CARS Program Administrator to schedule orientations and vehicles for your class.
Please also keep in mind:
- LSA-CARS operates in Fall and Winter semesters. We do not offer Spring/Summer service.
- If you'd like to integrate community-based learning into your course, Ginsberg Center offers faculty training and consultations.
- Lab Fee request deadlines are: February 8 for Fall courses and Spring and/or Summer Courses. October 8 for Winter Courses. (Lab Fees Policy)
- Lab fees contribute to the cost of vehicle rental. The remainder of the expense is subsidized by LSA. (Lab Fees justification example)
- LSA-CARS does not provide drivers for the vehicles.
- Due to a limited number of vehicles, sites that are serviced by a bus line may not be eligible.
- Vehicles carry up to 7 total occupants.
- Field trips and/or large groups cannot be accommodated. To apply for field trip funding: Instructional Development Fund (IDF) through CRLT.
- Students who use their own vehicles are not covered by U-M auto insurance.
