Balancing academic rigor with flexibility in language courses

Description:

In this session we will explore some of the challenges we are facing as instructors, in our remote instruction, around flexibility and academic rigor. We will discuss possible ways of creating an engaging, welcoming, understanding teaching environment while encouraging quality performance and setting reasonable expectations, both for the instructor and the students. Please consider sharing examples of challenges you have encountered and how you were able to address them.

About the Discussant:

Sabine Gabaron, Lecturer, Department of Romance Languages and Literatures, University of Michigan

Short Bio: Sabine Gabaron is a French native speaker, Lecturer IV at the University of Michigan.
She coordinated elementary French for a few years and has been teaching across the curriculum. Since her first year as an instructor, she has been interested in developing new teaching techniques involving technology, encouraging meaningful communication in the classroom, and motivating students to express their passions and interests in the foreign language, to feel empowered and individually successful.
