The list below shows the variety of languages offered, and gives additional information such as major/minor, scholarships and study abroad opportunities. Note that study abroad programs can vary throughout the year, so refer to the MCompass site for the most up-to-date information. If you have prior experience in a language, be sure to take the appropriate placement test.
If you have experience in a language that is not taught at U-M, the LRC can facilitate a proficiency test to determine if this experience will fulfill the LSA language requirement. The introductory sequence of Middle Egyptian (MELANG 430-531) teaches the hieroglyphic writing system and the classical stage of the ancient Egyptian language; it also fulfills the LSA language requirement with successful completion of MELANG 531. Subsequent reading courses can focus on any genre (royal inscriptions, literature, letters) or specialized topic (Book of the Dead, legal texts), depending on student interest. First year sequence geared towards those with no background and is suitable for undergraduates at any level (despite 400-level code).
