World Languages

The University of Michigan offers between 50-60 languages each academic year. The list below shows the variety of languages offered, and gives additional information such as major/minor, scholarships and study abroad opportunities. Note that study abroad programs can vary throughout the year, so refer to the MCompass site for the most up-to-date information. If you have prior experience in a language, be sure to take the appropriate placement test.

If you have experience in a language that is not taught at U-M, the LRC can facilitate a proficiency test to determine if this experience will fulfill the LSA language requirement. Find out more about proficiency tests for languages not taught at U-M. You may also find these FAQs for students taking proficiency tests for languages not taught at U-M helpful.

Additionally, learn more about our CourseShare options. - If you are interested in languages and language classes that we do not offer here at U-M you may be able to take courses through the Big Ten Academic Alliance (BTAA) CourseShare initiative to expand your language learning opportunities.
