The Hopwood Program is grateful to the alumni, families, faculty, and friends whose generosity has helped sustain the program and support student writers. Gifts to the Hopwood Program have established prizes and provided resources that support student writing and the Hopwood Room and Library.
Named Gifts & Prizes
The following awards and funds were made possible by the generosity of Hopwood Program donors.
Academy of American Poets Prize
Two $100 awards for poems submitted by University of Michigan undergraduate and graduate students, endowed by Sharon Galley Sherrow in memory of her husband, David Galley, a 1966 University of Michigan graduate.
Andrea Beauchamp Prize
An award donated by Professor John Wagner to the first-place winner in the Hopwood Graduate Short Fiction division.
Arthur Miller Award of the University of Michigan Club of New York Scholarship Fund
An award for a sophomore or junior who demonstrates achievement in drama, fiction, poetry, or screenplay, established to honor Hopwood laureate Arthur Miller.
Bain-Swiggett Poetry Prize
An award for the best poem in traditional form submitted by a University of Michigan student established by Glen Levin Swiggett and Emma Bain Swiggett.
Chamberlain Award for Creative Writing
An award honoring University of Michigan graduates Elinor, Margaret, and Dorothy Chamberlain, recognizing excellence in short fiction.
Cora Duncan Award in Fiction
An award recognizing excellence in a single short story, in honor of five-time Hopwood laureate Cora Duncan. The award was established by Craig Ruff and Janice Ruff and receives additional support from Jeff Williams.
David Porter Award for Excellence in Journalism
An award established by Andrea Sachs, Larry Kirshbaum, and the English Alumni Board to recognize outstanding student journalists in honor of Professor of English and Comparative Literature David Porter.
Dennis McIntyre Prize for Distinction in Undergraduate Playwriting
An award established by the family, friends, and former students of Hopwood laureate Dennis McIntyre to honor excellence in undergraduate playwriting.
Frank and Gail Beaver Script Writing Prize
An award to a Department of Film, Television, and Media student for a distinguished script established by Hopwood winner and Professor Emeritus Frank Beaver and his wife.
Geoffrey James Gosling Prize
An award donated by Mrs. Enid M. Gosling to the first-place winner in the Hopwood Novel division, in memory of her son.
Helen J. Daniels Prize
An award donated by Professor Marilyn M. Rosenthal for the Hopwood Undergraduate Nonfiction prize.
Helen S. and John Wagner Prize
An award donated by Professor John Wagner to the first-place winner in the Hopwood Graduate Poetry division.
Jeffrey L. Weisberg Memorial Prize in Poetry
Two annual prizes established by the family and friends of Hopwood laureate Jeffrey L. Weisberg for the best poems submitted by first- and second-year University of Michigan students.
John Wagner Prize
An award donated by Professor John Wagner to the first-place winner in the Hopwood Graduate Nonfiction division.
Kasdan Scholarship in Creative Writing
Endowed by Hopwood laureate Lawrence Kasdan and Michigan alumna Meg Kasdan, the award recognizes excellence in drama or screenplay writing.
Keith Taylor Award for Excellence in Poetry
An award donated by Ann Arbor novelist Steve Gillis in honor of poet and Emeritus Collegiate Lecturer Keith Taylor, recognizing an outstanding undergraduate poet.
Leonard and Eileen Newman Writing Prizes in Dramatic Writing and Fiction
Prizes established through the support of Leonard and Eileen Newman, who supported the arts and cultural enrichment at the University of Michigan.
Marjorie Rapaport Award in Poetry
An award established in memory of Hopwood laureate Marjorie Rapaport by her mother, Mrs. Phyllis Rapaport.
Marjorie Rapaport Fund
A fund established in memory of Hopwood laureate Marjorie Rapaport by her brother, Ray Rapaport, to support Hopwood programming.
Meader Family Award
An award established by the late Hon. George Meader and his family and friends, also honoring his daughter Barbara Ellen Meader and his wife Elizabeth Barbara Meader.
Miriam and Melvyn Zerman Book Fund
The fund, established in honor of Michigan alumni Miriram and Melvyn Zerman by the Zerman family, supports the Hopwood Library.
Naomi Saferstein Literary Award
An award donated by Mrs. Irene Miller and the friends and family of Hopwood laureate Naomi Saferstein for the top-ranking undergraduate in the Hopwood Drama or Hopwood Screenplay division.
Paul and Sonia Handleman Award
An award for an undergraduate who has demonstrated excellence in poetry in the Romantic tradition, established in memory of Paul and Sonia Handleman.
Peter Phillip Pratt Award in Fiction
An award recognizing excellence in a single short story in honor of Hopwood laureate Peter Phillip Pratt. The award was established by Craig Ruff and Janice Ruff with additional support from Jeff Williams.
Robert F. Haugh Prize
An award donated by Mrs. Georgia C. Haugh and the family and friends of Professor Robert F. Haugh for the first-place winner in the Hopwood Undergraduate Fiction division.
Roy and Helen Meador Award
An award established by Helen Meador in memory of her husband, Roy Meador, and given to an undergraduate based on financial need and writing talent.
Roy W. Cowden Memorial Fellowship
Fellowships made possible by contributions from Hopwood laureates and other students of Professor Cowden, Director of the Hopwood Program from 1934 until 1952, awarded on the basis of financial need and writing talent.
Stanley S. Schwartz Prize
An award donated by Ann Arbor novelist Steven Gillis in memory of his father, Stanley Schwartz, a University of Michigan graduate who studied English and creative writing.
Text/Image Composition Prize
A prize made possible by a gift from Ann Arbor entrepreneur and philanthropist Joshua Pokempner.
Support the Hopwood Program
We welcome donations to support Hopwood programming, resources, and initiatives connected to the Hopwood centenary. While we are not currently seeking gifts to establish additional prizes, donations can help sustain the programs and resources that support student writers.
