Dr. Oksana Chabanyuk is an associate professor of architecture at Kharkiv National University of Urban Economy, Ukraine. She received a Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia Scholars at Risk Fellowship for the 2022-24 academic year at the University of Michigan. She is teaching two courses: "Architecture of Soviet Ukraine" and "Urban concepts in Eastern Europe XIX-XX centuries" at the Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning during her fellowship. Her research was supported by the Fulbright Program, when she was a Fulbright Visiting Scholar 2019-20 at the University of Michigan, where her research focused on the contribution of American specialists to the development of industry and cities in 1920-30s Eastern Ukraine. Chabanyuk authored a chapter “The Forgotten History of Foreign Specialists in Soviet Industry in the 1920 and 1930s: The Case of Eastern Ukraine” in the book Detroit-Moscow-Detroit: An Architecture for Industrialization, 1917-1945 (MIT Press, 2023).
Dr. Chabanyuk’s academic interests include: standardization and early industrialization in the USSR, the related influence of foreign specialists, prefabrication in industrial construction and housing, post-socialist housing, social housing, and regeneration of residential areas.
She is an architect and received her BA in Architecture (1998), MA in Urban Planning (2000), and PhD (2004) at the National University Lviv Polytechnic, Ukraine. Her PhD thesis, "Living environment regeneration of high-storied residential areas of the 1970-1980s," cites Lviv as its example. She has participated in international competitions, programs, and workshops including: exchange study at Coventry University, UK (1996); Visiting Teachers Program at the AA School of Architecture, London (2010); visiting researcher at the University of Lisbon, Portugal (2014-2015); visiting teacher at the Dublin Institute of Technology, Ireland (2015) and Lublin University of Technology, Poland (2016-2018); and Visiting Lecturer at Nuremberg Institute of Technology, Germany (2022). Oksana Chabanyuk has also presented and discussed her research at international conferences, roundtables, visiting lectures and seminars in Austria, Germany, Poland, Portugal, UK, USA, and Ukraine.
Her U-M faculty mentor is Lars Gräbner, associate professor of practice in architecture.
