In December 2016, the Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia at the University of Michigan organized its second NGO Leadership Workshop in Bratislava, Slovakia. This year’s program expanded to bring together 25 leaders from NGOs in countries experiencing democratic transitions for participation in the weeklong intensive training. The workshop, which aims to make civil society organizations more effective and durable, was organized in continued partnership with the William Davidson Institute at the University of Michigan and the Slovak-based Pontis Foundation.
During the workshop, NGO leaders were taught management skills that will help them to successfully engage with the general public, government stakeholders, and international partners. Global faculty taught sessions on building strong and sustainable organizations, with emphasis given to vision and strategy, financial management, resource mobilization, and proposal writing. Participants were chosen through an open and competitive application process. Selected leaders from Albania, Armenia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Kyrgyzstan, Macedonia, Moldova, Russia, Serbia, Uzbekistan, Tunisia, and Ukraine gathered, representing NGOs that focus on democracy, human rights, environmental issues, economic development, youth, and civil society.
