In order to foster more faculty and student collaboration and exchange between Fudan University (Shanghai, China) and the University of Michigan, the Center for Chinese Studies at UM invites UM faculty and research scientists to submit proposals for either 1) short-term exploratory travel to Fudan 2) joint research proposals with Fudan faculty.  Eligibility, requirements, and deadlines are listed below for each proposal.

Short-term Exploratory Travel

The Center for Chinese Studies will make grants up to $2500 to fund faculty travel to Fudan to conduct exploratory discussions on joint research topics in the social sciences. 

Eligibility: Faculty members and researchers who are assistant, associate, or full professors, research professors or research scientists, or clinical faculty engaged in research.

Scope: Social science projects are defined as research related to human behavior and society, using either quantitative or qualitative methodologies.  Applications are not restricted by department or school.

Applications should include:

  1. Official application form with checklist (form will open in Web browser)
  2. One page description of the planned travel, including the research topic and the relevant faculty/units at Fudan.
  3. The applicant’s CV
  4. A letter of interest from a Fudan faculty member
  5. A budget and schedule

Applications for exploratory travel grants are accepted year-around. Notifications are made monthly.

Joint Research Proposals

The Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies will make grants up to USD$10,000/year for up to two years for joint research projects in the social sciences between UM and Fudan faculty and researchers.  The maximum duration of any project is two years (twenty-four months).

Eligibility: Faculty members and researchers who are assistant, associate, or full professors, research professors or research scientists, or clinical faculty engaged in research.

Scope: Social sciences are defined as research projects related to human behavior and society, using either quantitative or qualitative methodologies.  Applications are not restricted by department or school.

Each research proposal must include at least one (1) UM faculty or research scientist and one (1) Fudan faculty or research scientist.

UM funds can be used to fund relevant research expenses and travel and accommodations of UM members of the research team.  They also can be used to fund local accommodation expenses of Fudan members of the research team, but travel costs should be borne by each home institution.

Applications must include:

  1. Official application form with checklist (form will open in Web browser)
  2. A research project proposal with a maximum of 2,000 words, which includes the following:
    a. A substantive description of the research activities, including the research question, methodology and
        data collection, and the broader relevance of the project
    b. A timetable for the research activities and related travel
    c. Planned outcomes, include databases, publications, workshops, etc.;
    d. A description of each member’s contribution to the research activity, explaining their expertise to carry
        out the research project;
    e. Any proposed involvement of undergraduate or graduate students.
  3. A detailed budget
  4. CVs of the principal investigators
  5. A letter of support from the Fudan P.I.s’ home department or unit

Applications for joint research proposals are due September 1, 2016. Notifications will be made by October 15, 2016.
