Join us in congratulating, ASC associate, Nesha Haniff on her recent book award! Each year, IARSLCE celebrates a single published piece that has a significant impact on the study and/or practice of service-learning and community engagement. Haniff’s book, The Pedagogy of Action: Small Axe Fall Big Tree, is described by the IARSLCE as:
An exposition of praxis. Grounding herself in the revolutionary work of Paulo Freire, Bell Hooks, Ela Bhatt, and others, Dr. Haniff weaves and creates the Pedagogy of Action for university students to radically engage with communities in the African diaspora. The volume includes a series of reflective essays, which capture the process of transformational growth as the authors explore issues of race, gender, and privilege.
The African Studies Center has continuously supported Nesha Haniff prior to her retirement from the University of Michigan. During her time at Michigan, ASC aided in the publishing of her award-winning book.
Haniff’s work has focused on empowerment pedagogies and marginalized populations, which have been centered on HIV, gender, and innovative education for low-literate populations. She has developed several educational modules on HIV/AIDS, violence, and women’s reproductive health. Her work has been located in the Caribbean, South Africa, and the US. In addition to her book, the African Studies Center sponsored the study abroad program to South Africa, where Haniff was joined by students dedicated to learning about human rights advocacy.
