The Management and Analysis of Data for Social Science and Other Research

Course Outcome 2017

This year’s ASRI Stata course has come to a successful completion. The two-week training programme on the use of Stata, a leading software for econometric and statistical analyses, was held from July 24 to August 4 at the University of Ghana.

This year’s course was the fifth to be held at the University of Ghana. There were 18 course students and a team of 8 resource persons. The course students included graduate students, staff of the Bank of Ghana (Ghana’s central bank), and two participants who reside outside Ghana (Nigeria and the USA). The resource persons for the course comprised persons affiliated to the University of Ghana, the University of Cape Coast, and the University of British Columbia. The training focused mainly on data management with Stata, and the analysis of survey datasets. By courtesy of ASRI, course participants received licenses for Stata 15 (latest version of the software), for which they were very thankful. The course participants were also presented with certificates of participation. Notably, the number of course students this year was much lower than what we have generally had over the past four years, and this was largely due to the increase in the course fee and the low patronage of participants with sponsorship from corporate organizations. As might be expected, the low level of patronage put a significant strain on the course budget. In spite of these challenges, the course was held without any major hitch, and the participants found the training very useful.

Course Outcome:  The two-week training programme on the use of Stata, a leading software for econometric and statistical analyses, was held from July 18 to July 29 at the University of Ghana.

The participants, numbering 38, included University faculty, graduate students, officers from Ghana’s Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Ministry of Roads and Highways, and National Communications Authority. The instructors for the training comprised researchers and academics from the University of Ghana, the University of Cape Town (South Africa), and the University of Cape Coast (Ghana). The training focused mainly on data management with Stata, and the analysis of survey datasets with the software. By courtesy of ASRI, course participants received licenses for Stata 14 (latest version of the software), for which they were very appreciative. The course participants were also presented with certificates of participation. Judging by views expressed by the participants, the two-week training was very successful.
