In the Dungeons of the Louvre: Material Research on a Magical Papyrus Roll
Friday, November 10, 2023 | 12:00 PM
Papyrology Reading Room (Room 807, Hatcher Library)
In this workshop, we will report on our recent study of the materiality of a well-known 3rd to 4th-century CE magical handbook from Egypt (the Mimaut Papyrus, also known as PGM III / GEMF 55), now preserved in the collections of the Louvre Museum in Paris. Our work has led us to change the arrangement of its fragments, significantly affecting the order of the text as established over a century ago. In this presentation, we will explain the procedures used to verify the new order of the fragments, explore the scribal use of the roll, and discuss the results of our analysis of the inks used.
Event sponsored by the Department of History and the Papyrology Collection.
