Teaching is an integral part of a student's funding package. Graduate students teach during their time at Michigan, normally starting during their second year. Being a graduate student instructor (GSI) provides a great opportunity that not only prepares you for the job market but also hones your understanding and analysis of the material. Prior to teaching, students are provided training through the History Department and the Center for Research on Learning and Teaching (CRLT). As GSIs, students normally teach in the survey courses in Greek and Roman history offered by the History Department or in various courses offered by the Classical Studies Department, such as classical civilization courses, language courses, or possibly archaeology courses. As students advance through the Program, opportunities for planning and teaching one's own course may be available.
The terms and conditions of your employment as a Graduate Student Instructor are governed by a collective bargaining agreement between the Regents of the University of Michigan and the Graduate Employees’ Organization (the “UM/GEO Agreement”). The Graduate Employees’ Organization (GEO) is the labor union for Graduate Student Instructors (GSIs) and Graduate Student Staff Assistants (GSSAs) at the University of Michigan.
