Omeka S is a web platform designed for creating digital collections and online exhibits. Digital items with media and metadata can be searched, sorted, categorized, or filtered. Light exhibit narration with embedded digital items from the collection can help cohere the collection logically.

What you get

  • Your own Omeka S instance pre-installed for you on an OpenShift hosting container

  • Ten GB of storage

  • Your own URL (typically in the form of “requested-site-name.department-domain.lsa.umich.edu.“) with SSL certificate encryption

  • Pre-installed frequently used Omeka S modules. More available upon request (can be self service with some technical experience)

  • Pre-installed frequently used Omeka S themes

  • Access to consultation sessions by Research Consultants on how to use Omeka S

Support Details

  • Get support, including questions, issues, or requests related to Omeka S hosting.

  • Provisioning a new Omeka S instance typically takes about two weeks from when it is requested.

  • Typically, there will be an introductory consultation session with a research consultant before provisioning an Omeka S instance.

  • System backups are taken nightly and restoration of a full instance can be requested in the event of a disaster.

  • The Web Content Retention Policy applies to sites on this service.

Things to think about when considering Omeka S

Portability considerations

It’s easier to take your information with you if you keep materials like metadata and media files separate from the Omeka interface in your workflow.

Preservation considerations

The user interface is difficult to preserve, but the metadata and media files are easier to preserve if they have been kept separately from the Omeka interface

Accessibility considerations

Omeka can be WCAG 2.0 and 2.1 AA level compliant

Sustainability considerations

Websites of this nature tend to last only about 3-5 years before they need a dedicated project to update them.
