U-M's Political Science Associate Professor, Kenneth Lowande, writes an Opinion in The Hill and says, "The purpose of the president going alone on immigration is political; whether it fixes the problem is almost beside the point."
"American presidents have vast powers given to them by the Constitution and decades of deference by Congress. But even these powers fall well short of what's needed to provide real solutions to America's policy problems. It's a paradox of our system of government: American presidents have more power than any other human, but not nearly enough to satisfy all our demands."
Kenneth Lowande studies American political institutions and policymaking. He has published research on congressional oversight, presidential power, and policy implementation. Lowande previously held research fellowships at Washington University in St. Louis and Princeton University. In October 2024, the University of Chicago Press will publish his book False Front: The Failed Promise of Presidential Power.
