Dissertation Title: “Political Resocialization of Immigrants from Authoritarian Contexts”
Committee: Mark Tessler (Chair), Justine Davis, Ann Lin, Yuki Shiraito
Summary: I study the ways in which individual citizens’ beliefs about and understandings of democracy can reinforce or undermine authoritarian rule. Much of my research is based on individual-level data such as surveys, interviews, and social media activity. My dissertation (and eventually book project) examines the extent to which Turkish immigrants' democratic norms change as a result of living in the US. As a comparativist, my regional focus is in Middle Eastern politics. As a methodologist, I embrace both quantitative and qualitative methods and have special expertise in computational text analysis.
