About
Elizabeth Popp Berman is a sociologist whose work is at the intersection of organizations, economic sociology, and the sociology of science and knowledge. Much of her work focuses on recent U.S. history and emphasizes the role of public policy. Her latest book, Thinking Like an Economist: How Economics Became the Language of U.S. Public Policy, from Princeton University Press has received praise from the likes of New York Times, Boston Review, and The New Yorker. Her first book, Creating the Market University: How Academic Science Became an Economic Engine, won several awards from the American Sociological Association and the Social Science History Association.
Beth joined Michigan in 2019 from the University at Albany, SUNY, where she was an associate professor of sociology. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania, and her MA and Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. Beth became the first female director of the Organizational Studies program in the summer of 2022.
