Addressing Individual and Systemic Inequity in Health and Medicine
My pathway focuses on equity-based practices in healthcare, both on an individual and systemic level. I intend on identifying the root issues of American political power structures, and who is most harmed by them specifically through the country's medical policies. A person-forward approach in our healthcare system is necessary to dismantle the systems of oppression that are perpetuated through it. I am invested in questioning how gender, race, and socioeconomic status affect one's ability to access healthcare as a right, and to what extent biases in media, religion, and politics affect medical rights in the United States.Through my coursework, I investigate US law, sociology pertaining to social inequity, marketing and language strategy, and economic power in the health and medicine sectors. The privatization of healthcare makes it a commodity as compared to a right, creating a hierarchy that caters to a limited demographic. My goal is to assess these gaps in access and find ways to bridge them in individual practices and larger political action.
