Optimizing Accessibility within Education and Workplaces to Create Equitable Learning/Working Environments
Within my OS pathway, I want to explore the intersections between disability rights advocacy and the organizational practices of education systems and positive workforce environments. In many educational spheres, there are immense inequities when it comes to providing adequate resources and funding to district special education programs within school systems. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act underscores the importance for students of all abilities to be able to receive an adequate education geared to each student’s respective support needs, however, so often in various district programs, immense teacher and funding shortages result in deficient support for students with a range of cognitive and physical disabilities. I am passionate about improving district special education programs to transform inaccessible classroom environments into spaces for all. Ensuring that educational communities implement adaptable curriculums and learning spaces, in addition to adjusting organizational processes of school systems so that inclusion is always implemented, will be at the forefront of my goal to provide educational experiences that are universally designed to each student’s needs.
Furthermore, working towards instilling organizational inclusion also extends to the workforce. I am also interested in learning how to improve workplace cultures and practices that are accessible for all marginalized communities, specifically, disabled individuals to continue their professional careers beyond their years in educational institutions. Exploring how to develop accessible learning and working environments will prepare me for my future career goals of improving organizational environments for neurodivergent individuals.
