Understanding Organizational Structures in Order to Foster Connections Between Communities and Artistic Organizations within Society
The art world has slowly been changing to become a much more inclusive and safe space for artists of all identities and backgrounds. But it has taken a long time to get to this point, and there is still so much work to be done. Arts organizations that bring different art forms and arts/performance experiences to the public are a key element in this transformation. These organizational bodies hone in on arts presenting, engagement, and education that is so important for developing community and fostering creativity for artists and audiences alike. On its own, art is so significant to our society, as it reflects our humanity and connects us. However, there are many organizations that are structured in ways that limit the ability of groups to feel the benefits of the arts or do not represent the makeup of our society.
This is where I have found my passion- not only as an artist but as an advocate. Arts organizations (commercial and nonprofit) are how I see that art is communicated and shared with the world. I have realized the importance of recognizing my identities and using my privilege to promote ADEI practices within organizations and increase the consciousness level of one's lived experiences- so that no one is limited in their opportunities to access the arts. It is with this OS degree that I will gain knowledge on first the history of discrimination, privilege, and inequality (through classes like RCSSCI 330: Urban & Community Studies) that is at the foundation of our country & many others, as well as how these experiences can impact people on individual levels (in classes like PSYCH 425: Psychology of Inequality). While gaining this foundation in the social structure of our society and how organizations are valued, I will also gain an insight into the ways that organizations can be used for social change (ORGSTUDY 435: Managing People & Strategic Change in Organizations). The OS program provides a broad, wide-angle view of organizations in our society.
In tandem with this degree, I will be pursuing a bachelors in Theater Arts and a minor in Dance through SMTD. This dual degree path will allow me to hone in on a full perspective of the arts and the facilitation of bringing arts to communities or audiences (specifically theater and dance). I then can apply the knowledge learned through OS classes to arts organizations, especially with my Performing Arts Management concentration within the BTA. Being involved in the art world (as a dancer) from a very young age changed my life- for the better. I yearn to do this for more young people, erasing the boundaries that have for so long restricted or barred people of certain identities from fully and authentically participating in the arts. I want to learn the history that has shaped the outcomes in our society and change the current structures of these institutions that continue to perpetuate stereotypes or harmful practices.
