Social Responsibility and the Power of Business
Big corporations have a position unlike any other to enact meaningful change and do good in the world. Historically, many big businesses have a bad reputation when it comes to social responsibility; however, we have also seen B-corporations emerge and thrive in industries—proving the possibility of profitable success while staying true to a positive mission. Watching B-corporations such as Patagonia succeed, I’ve wondered how they set up their businesses in such a way, why other companies don’t share the focus on responsibility, and what it would take to change business structures to allow for the same social responsibility. With my double major in Organizational Studies and Economics, I aim to learn about how consumers, companies, and legislation impact one another to shape industries and find how to leverage this interaction to realize socially-responsible, profitable success built into corporate strategy.
