Knight-Hennessy Scholars Program

Overview and Introduction

The Knight-Hennessy Scholars Program at Stanford aims to prepare a new generation of global leaders with a deep academic foundation and the skills to develop creative solutions and effect positive change in the world.

Today, research universities are called to find new solutions through research and to educate courageous leaders able to forge collaborations and create change at scale. 

Each year a group of 100 students with demonstrated leadership and civic commitment, from a wide array of backgrounds, receive full funding for up to three years of graduate education at Stanford and participate in programming to develop their future leadership skills.​

Eligibility:

  • Degree Level: Senior or earned a bachelor's in the past 4 years
  • Academics: No requirement, but strong academic performance expected
  • Citizenship: No requirement

  • Purposeful Leadership
  • Civic Mindset

Application Deadlines

  • Endorsement: U-M Nomination is not required

Instructions for Prospective Applicants

Note: Incoming Knight-Hennessy Scholars must also apply to, be accepted by, and enroll in a full-time Stanford graduate degree program. Unless you have already been offered and deferred admission to a full-time Stanford graduate degree program, or you are a first-year Stanford PhD student applying to join KHS in your second year, you must submit separate applications: one to Knight-Hennessy Scholars, and an application(s) to your desired Stanford graduate degree program(s).

Application Components 

  1. Online application form
  2. Resume (1-page limit)
  3. Transcript(s)
  4. Test Scores (if applicable, see foundation site for more details)
  5. 2 Letters of recommendation
  6. 3 short-answer questions (word limits of 250 for the first two questions, and 150 for the third question)
  7. Essay (500 words)
