The Department of Middle East Studies acknowledges with profound sadness the death of Robert "Bob" Miller II, Ordinary Professor of Old Testament in the School of Theology and Religious Studies at Catholic University in Washington DC, and alumnus of U-M, who died Wednesday, November 22, 2023, at the age of 57. Professor Miller was, for many years, a friend, colleague, and a valued member of the alumni. He earned his PhD at U-M in the then named Near East Studies department in 1998. Bob served as Associate Dean of Graduate Studies for the School of Theology from 2017 to 2022. He was additionally a research affiliate of the University of Pretoria Faculty of Theology and Religion, and Life Member of St. John's College, Cambridge. Dr. Miller authored eleven scholarly books and numerous research papers and conference proceedings on the history, literature, religion, and archaeology of Ancient Israel in the First Temple Period. His passion was teaching his students, and he was recognized by numerous teaching awards including his most recent honor of the 2023 Teacher of the Year Award from the School of Theology and Religious Studies Students' Association. He will be remembered for his many contributions: to his field of study, his colleagues, and the many students he helped prepare for their future careers. He will be missed.
