Undergraduate Mentorship Program

Who's a faculty mentor?

A faculty mentor is any MES faculty member you can consult for educational and professional planning. You might want to discuss the honors program, summer internships, career paths, and other such issues. You should consider meeting with your faculty mentor at least once each semester, and you’re responsible for initiating that process. To find a faculty mentor, contact a professor you already know or review faculty profiles at the MES webpage. Please note that faculty mentors do not have access to the online advising file or formal records.

Then, who’s an Undergraduate Advisor?

In contrast, an Undergraduate Advisor has access to the online advising file and is responsible for advising students about departmental rules and regulations or to discuss transfer/study abroad credit approval, senior releases, etc. Use the online system to make an appointment with the Undergraduate Advisors.

What should I do to prepare for my meeting with my faculty mentor?

Please bring an unofficial transcript to your appointment. During the appointment, you and the faculty mentor should consider how current and previous coursework creates a coherent degree program and discuss how you can sustain that coherence with future courses.

What happens if my faculty mentor is unavailable?

If a faculty mentor goes on leave or sabbatical, it may be temporarily impossible for the mentor to fulfill their mentorship duties. In such cases, the student and mentor should work together to select a replacement faculty mentor.
