First Year @ U-M

Middle East Studies Major, Middle East Languages and Cultures Minor, Arabic Studies Minor

If you are interested in declaring a major in Middle East Studies, a minor in Middle East Studies or a minor in Arabic Studies, there are several things you can do during your first year at U-M to prepare yourself to declare one of these programs:

1) Consider which Middle East language you would like to study as part of your program, and start taking courses in this language. If you have prior experience studying one of the languages taught within the Department of Middle East Studies, and plan to continue studying this language while at U-M, take a placement test to determine the language course for which you should register.

2) Plan to take the course MIDEAST 200: Introduction to the Middle East in your first or second year, if possible. This course is a prerequisite for both the Middle East Studies major and the Middle East Studies minor, and is only offered in the Fall semester.

3) Consider attending a Middle East Studies Info Session or speak with our Student Services Assistant to learn more about the department and the programs of study offered.

4) Review the requirements for completing the Middle East Studies major, the Middle East Languages and Cultures minor, and the Arabic Studies minor on the MES department website.

5) Make an appointment to speak with an MES advisor regarding your course selections and your interest in Middle East Studies. Advising appointments can be extremely helpful in answering questions, clarifying your path through the program, or getting referrals on to campus resources ideal for a student in Middle East studies.

6) Check the calendar on the Department of Middle East Studies website to find upcoming campus events that may be relevant to your interests.
