Study Abroad

Oxford, England
Oxford University’s St. Peter’s College

Runs early July through mid-August. Application for this program is now managed through the Center for Global and Intercultural Studies.

Program Overview

The University of Michigan Summer in Oxford Program is a six-week program at St. Peter's College, Oxford University. One of the newest undergraduate Oxford colleges, St. Peter's is located in the center of historic Oxford. Its lawns and gardens make it a delightful and quiet place for a summer study program. Michigan students will take classes and reside at St. Peter's College, choosing between course offerings in medieval or environmental studies.

Academic Programs and Credits

Fellows of the College are responsible for the planning and teaching of all the courses. Students choose one of two programs of study:  Medieval Studies or Environmental, Urban and Regional Studies. Each program also offers three specific options. Students may choose only one option.

Medieval Studies

1. Culture and Society in Medieval England: 1066-1300
2. Death, Nature and Change in Medieval Literature
3. Medieval Women: Representations and Roles

In addition, all students enrolled in the Medieval Studies component will take an interdisciplinary seminar on the Arthurian Tradition.

Environmental, Urban and Regional Studies

1. Environmental Change: The British Landscape 8000 BC – 1700 AD
2. The New Space Economy: From Fordism to post-Fordism and Beyond
3. Environment & Global Security

Each of the two programs of study lasts five weeks, with the sixth week given over to reviews and study field trips. For students enrolled in the Environmental, Urban and Regional Studies component, participation in a four-day study field excursion through southwest England and Wales is required, while for those in the Medieval Studies section it is optional but recommended. Students earn 6 to 8 credits for the program. These count as in-residence credits at The University of Michigan; Michigan students are thus eligible to apply University of Michigan financial aid to the costs of the program. Course work and the study field trips are supplemented by evening lectures and other special activities organized by St. Peter's College.

The Academic Director of the Oxford program is Dr. Kenneth Addison, a fellow of St. Peter's College and Lecturer in Physical Geography. Dr. Addison has directed the program for several years and each year visits Ann Arbor to meet prospective students. Students considering the Oxford summer program should plan to meet Dr. Addison when he visits this January.

Calendar and Costs

The six-week program typically runs from early July through mid August.  Fees cover the costs of room and board at St. Peter’s, program excursions (except for the four-day field excursion, for which a supplementary fee is charged), and special lectures. In addition to the program fee, students are charged U-M summer half term tuition. Both the program fee and the tuition are billed through U-M student accounts. Students must make a separate application to the office of Financial Aid for Summer assistance. Students will also need to budget for personal spending money and airfare to and from Oxford.

Application Eligibility

Students applying to the Oxford summer program should have completed at least one full year of study at the university by the time the program begins. In addition, a GPA of 3.0 is recommended.
