Sumner B. Myers was a faculty member of the UM Mathematics Department from 1936 to 1955. His areas of study included topology and differential geometry, and he was highly respected among his colleagues. In October of 1955, Professor Myers was attending the UM-Army football game in Ann Arbor when he began to experience chest pains. He later passed away from a heart attack. The Sumner Myers Prize was established after his death to recognize the Ph.D. student(s) whose thesis was deemed the best contribution to their field.
