About
"The Flummox" and "14 Spencer Gardens"
The Flummox is a zine series that features women sharing their stories, thoughts, and experiences about perimenopause. In the last 5-10 years menopause has had increasing attention in the culture and media, including books, health journal and news articles, a Netflix series and more. Still, many people do not choose to talk about perimenopause and their experiences going through it with family, friends, and sometimes even doctors. The Flummox aims to move beyond the confusing nature of this life stage by sharing many voices of women who are ready to speak. This zine series intends to be a platform to share the vast and varied experiences of perimenopause–both funny and serious–so that anyone can learn about perimenopause for themselves or for someone they love. Perhaps one day perimenopause will be just a regular word, nothing to be weary or fearful of, without social stigma regarding aging or biological production–with no special power, either good or bad, just a life stage if you’re lucky to live to get to it–and see what’s next.
14 Spencer Gardens is a photobook/photo zine series exploring memory and aging with Sally Hetzel, born in 1938 London, as the focal point. The series investigates through story and image how memories change and evolve in the telling and as we age.
T Hetzel is a Lecturer II, Sweetland Center for Writing.
