About
Valentin Lewisch joined the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures in 2025. His research interests lie at the intersection of media theory, cultural studies, and law. He earned a doctoral degree in law from the University of Vienna in 2025, focusing on the organization of opera and musical theatre from an interdisciplinary perspective. Additionally, he holds a master’s degree in theatre, film, and media studies, where he explored the concept of the “in-between” through the lens of the interface.
For the past decade, Valentin has worked in artistic administration for opera companies in Austria and Germany, including the Vienna State Opera and the Berlin Opera Foundation. This professional background informs his interest in cultural institutions and the organization of the arts.
He is spending the 2025–26 academic year at the University of Michigan on exchange from the Free University of Berlin, further developing his research on the legal, institutional, and systemic aspects that shape culture and its production.
