Sarah Lime graduated from the University of Michigan in 2019 with a B.A. in German, Women’s Studies, and International Studies. Before returning to the University of Michigan for her doctoral studies, she earned a master’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Her dissertation examines representations of dolls and doll-like figures in early twentieth-century German media, with particular attention to the doll as a modernist medium embraced and reimagined by women artists. By subverting the social functions and aesthetic conventions of the “traditional” doll, these artists transform the doll into a site of self-reflection and a vehicle for asserting creative autonomy. More broadly, Sarah’s research explores the intersections of gender, sexuality, and the body, with the doll serving as a particularly productive surface upon which these interests converge. She is also pursuing a graduate certificate in Women’s and Gender Studies.
