At this year’s commencement, our department celebrated a historic milestone: the graduation of the first two students to complete the Minor in Dutch Language and Culture. Gigi DeJong and Jessica Maisonneuve were recognized as the program’s first graduates and as pioneers in a curriculum that emphasizes global perspectives.
Gigi and Jessica’s journey through the Dutch program was truly unique. They became the first students in the world to study all three national varieties of the Dutch language: Netherlands Dutch, Belgian Dutch (Flemish), and Surinamese Dutch outside of Suriname itself. Their studies culminated in the new minor, which was established in 2024 and shaped by collaborative input from students and faculty.
During the ceremony, faculty members Annemarie Toebosch and Denice Gravenstijn spoke about the impact of Gigi and Jessica’s work, including their contributions to Surinamese Dutch poetry and their efforts to center Surinamese identity on campus. To honor their achievements, they were presented with graduation sashes in the colors of Suriname, symbolizing transformation, freedom, and justice.
Congratulations to Gigi and Jessica, and to our entire Dutch program community for this inspiring milestone!
