Distinguished Fellow

WCEE hosts a prominent scholar, public figure, or activist at U-M during the academic year. The fellow may give a public lecture, teach a course, or otherwise participate in scholarship on campus.

Joseph Sywenkyj

WCEE Distinguished Fellow, 2024-25

An award-winning American photographer of Ukrainian descent, Joseph Sywenkyj has lived and worked in Ukraine for the last two decades. He has worked throughout Europe and Central Asia for numerous publications and is a frequent contributor to The Wall Street Journal. His photographs have been exhibited in galleries and museums, including the United Nations Visitor’s Lobby in New York and the Taras Shevchenko National Museum in Kyiv. Sywenkyj is also a 2024-25 Knight Wallace Fellow at the University of Michigan. 

WCEE will host a photo exhibit "Verses from a Nation in Transition. Ukraine in Photographs by Joseph Sywenkyj" from October 1 - November 29, 2024 in the International Institute Gallery (5th floor, Weiser Hall).
