A number of visiting faculty and scholars have been affiliated with the Center for varying lengths of time. Some visitors are here for the entire academic year, while others may be on campus only for a few weeks. Sachiko Kita

Dr. Sachiko Kita, PhD, RN, CNW, PHN, is CJS's 2024–25 Visiting Scholar. She has been an Assistant Professor and a Junior Associate Professor (Senior Lecturer) at The University of Tokyo between 2015 and 2024. Her primary research focuses on preventing and terminating gender-based violence (GBV), especially intimate partner violence and child abuse, and enhancing holistic recovery among survivors. Since 2017, she has been collaborating with Dr. Denise Saint Arnault at the University of Michigan School of Nursing to identify trauma recovery pathways for Japanese and American survivors as well as facilitate the development of comprehensive and culturally sensitive care guidelines. She is also a board member of the Multicultural Study of Trauma Recovery international research consortium (MiStory) directed by Dr. Saint Arnault, a platform for collaborating with scholars from 13 countries, such as the U.S., Japan, Greece, Iceland, and Israel.
Mariko Okada

Dr. Mariko Okada, PhD is CJS's 2024–25 Visiting Scholar. She is a Professor of Japanese Literature at Oberlin University in Tokyo and was CJS's 2012–13 Toyota Visiting Professor. Her research focuses on traditional Japanese performance, with a particular emphasis on the practices of Geisha in Kyoto. Her current work explores the experiences of Japanese female performers who traveled to the United States during the Meiji and Taishō periods.
Chihiro Tajima

Dr. Chihiro Tajima is CJS's 2023–25 Visiting Scholar. She is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Intercultural Studies at Gakushuin Women's College in Tokyo. Her research interests include intercultural/second-language communication, evaluation of study-abroad programs, and mixed-methods research. She is also an Associate Member of the U-M Mixed Methods Program.
