Mark D. West, a professor at the University of Michigan Law School, former CJS director, and current CJS faculty member is an expert in Japanese law and the country’s legal system.
He spoke with the BBC about why Japan is so successful at returning lost property, such as a phone or wallet, to its rightful owner — thanks to the abundance of police officers and cultural traditions that prompt people to think first of others.
