The Association for Asian Studies

The Association for Asian Studies (AAS), the premier professional organization for scholars of Asia in the United States, posts open position announcements of Asian Studies related jobs on its website.  In order to view the current jobs listings on this webiste, you must be a current member of AAS; student memberships are available.  AAS also offers job placement and interviewing services at its Annual Meeting.

H-Net, Humanities and Social Sciences Online, a mailing list service on a variety of humanities and social science topics, runs a job guide service that lists open positions in the humanities and social sciences in United States and around the world, including postdoctoral fellowships, tenure track positions, non-tenure track positions, and visiting positions.

 
The Chronicle of Higher Education

The Chronicle of Higher Education's website has a jobs section that provides a comprehensive listing of jobs at academic institutions, including, faculty positions, research positions, administrative jobs, and executive positions.  University of Michigan faculty, students, and staff have full access to the Chronicle of Higher Education online through the library.  The jobs section of the website is open to all.

 
Japan Research Career Information Network (JREC-IN)

Japan Research Career Information Network (JREC-IN) is a national clearinghouse of open positions in Japanese public and private universities, junior colleges and research institutes for all disciplines.  Both tenure track academic positions and research staff positions are posted.

U-M Career Center offers comprehensive career services to U-M students and alumni.

U-M International Center's Education Abroad Office provides general information, consultation, and helpful tips on working abroad.

U-M Alumni Association provides career-related services to U-M alumni and current students.

US Department of State

The US Department of State offers a number of internship and fellowship opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students as well as working professionals, including internships at the US Embassy in Tokyo and US consulates located throughout Japan.

Japan Center for Michigan Universities (JCMU)

Japan Center for Michigan Universities (JCMU) is a consortium of public universities in Michigan of which U-M is a member.  JCMU is administered at Michigan State University and has a campus in Hikone, Shiga Prefecture.  JCMU has a 12-week Summer Internship program in Japan that combines advanced Japanese language study, 9-week internship placement, and reflective meetings with JCMU faculty and staff.  Minimum GPA of 3.0 and three years of college level Japanese required.  Students apply directly to JCMU.

 
Pasona Internship Program

The Pasona Internship Program allows outstanding undergraduate and graduate students to participate in a two-month internship at a Japanese company.  The program also provides a monthly stipend, round-trip airfare as well as company sponsored housing in the Tokyo metropolitan area.  Application deadline is typically in December.

 
AIESEC

AIESEC is a student-run organization that provides international internships in over 120 countries including Japan from 6 weeks to 18 months.  Students must become AIESEC member to apply for a position.  Most positions are paid. University of Michigan has an on-campus chapter.

Institute of Contemporary Asian Studies (ICAS), Temple University Japan

ICAS offers unpaid summer internships to undergraduate and graduate students on their Tokyo campus.  Interns work as research associates assisting faculty research projects in the humanities and social sciences, or assist administrators and staff in organizing conferences and special symposia.

  
Ibaraki Christian University

Ibaraki Christian University offers summer and academic year unpaid internships for students interested in teaching English to undergraduate students at the university.  Interns will work with students in and outside of the classroom to help them academically, provide communication practice and create opportunities where students can use their English in nonacademic settings such as playing games, sports and other extracurricular activities that interns will plan.

Japan Business Society of Detroit

Japan Business Society of Detroit (JBSD) is a business association of Japan-related companies with offices in southeastern Michigan.  Their website (in Japanese only) offers job opening listings and contact information for member companies.

TOP is a placement agency that specializes in Japan-related businesses in the United States, such as US operations of Japanese multinationals.  The Chicago office works with students at U-M.

Japan Exchange and Teaching Program

The Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program offers opportunities for those with bachelors degrees to work as Assistant English Teachers (AET) in public elementary, junior high, and high schools in Japan and as Coordinator of International Relations (CIR) in municipal government offices (city, town, and village halls).  AET positions do not require knowledge of Japanese but CIR positions require knowledge of Japanese at approximately Japanese Language Proficiency Test Level N2 (approximately equivalent to sixth term proficiency at UM).  Applications are usually available in the fall with a late November or early December deadline for positions beginning in August.  CJS sponsors information sessions on JET in the fall term.

American Chamber of Commerce in Japan

American Chamber of Commerce in Japan (ACCJ) is a business association of American companies with offices in Japan.  ACCJ offers job posting and resume service called Ecentral through their website: go to the home page and look for "Jobs" in the menu bar just below their logo.  Searches and email notification are available.  Both Japanese and American companies advertise positions on this site.

 
DISCO International

DISCO International sponsors job fairs called Career Forum at which major Japanese companies recruit students and recent graduates.  They also operate a searchable job database on their website.  Participants must have basic proficiency in English and Japanese.

Mynavi USA

Mynavi USA offers periodic job fairs, called Mynavi Global Career Expo, in the United States and Japan for Japanese-speaking bilinguals who are seeking entry-level positions at Japan-related companies.
