The University of Michigan’s Center for European Studies (CES) is a constituent unit of the International Institute (II) and Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia (WCEE). It aims to bring together scholars, policymakers, business persons, and diplomats from both sides of the Atlantic and across schools and disciplines, to promote the study and understanding of Europe. Launched in 1996, CES was approved by the Regents of the University on June 1, 1999 as the successor to the former Center for Western European Studies. From 2001-11, CES received European Commission funding and was renamed the Center for European Studies-European Union Center; from 2005-11, it was designated by the Commission as a European Union Center of Excellence. CES offers an array of public programs, funding opportunities, and innovative curricular outreach on Europe.
