The University of Michigan’s Center for European Studies (CES), a constituent of the International Institute and the Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia, is a multi-disciplinary research, education, and outreach program dedicated to improving understanding of modern, integrated Europe at the University of Michigan (U-M). In 2001, CES received a grant from the European Commission to establish a European Union Center (EUC), and from 2005 to 2011 U-M’s EUC was designated a European Union Center of Excellence, one of ten in the United States. In collaboration with academic and research units across U-M, CES offers an array of public programs, funding opportunities, and innovative curricular outreach on Europe.
THE CENTER:
- Brings together more than 100 tenured or tenure-track faculty in more than 20 departments of the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts and eight other schools and colleges who teach and conduct research on modern Europe and the European Union
- Awards Summer Research and Internship Grants and Jean Monnet Graduate Fellowships
- Benefits from the university’s libraries which contain over 800,000 Europe-focused titles in English and more than 700,000 in other languages, including one of the largest research collections on EU law and member countries
- Offers an interdisciplinary minor in Modern European Studies for undergraduate students
- Offers an interdisciplinary graduate certificate in European and European Union Studies for graduate students
- Organizes public events including lectures, conferences, workshops, and film series
- Partners with a broad spectrum of U-M departments as well as other universities and scholarly institutions in the U.S. and Europe
- Is an institutional member of the Council for European Studies, making all University of Michigan students and faculty eligible for a wide range of grants and awards.
- Benefits from over 80 U-M agreements with European institutions of higher learning and research involving student exchange and international collaboration (more than with any other world region)
- Serves as a regional resource for expertise on Europe and the EU to schools, colleges, and businesses in Michigan and the Midwest

There is limited metered street parking near Weiser Hall on Church Street and South University Avenue. Two parking structures are approximately two blocks away:

University of Michigan employees with a U-M parking permit will find the Church Street structure the closest to Weiser Hall, with the Hill Street, Thayer Street, and Forest Avenue structures all within walking distance. Please note that many University parking structures are free and open to the public after 6 pm each day and on Sunday.
