"The Gift of Shared Stories"
In the 2025 Henry Russel Lecture, Ruth Behar will talk about how shared stories can bring people together across borders and differences, creating unique moments of connection. In her own work in Spain, Mexico, and Cuba, and in her contributions to the rethinking of the history of anthropology, she has used an approach of writing personally and with the sensibility of a ‘vulnerable observer’ to be able to share such stories. She will also speak of her most recent writing, in which she ventures into writing literary fiction, as a new venue for bringing the insights of anthropology and the gift of shared stories together.
