Anthropology Department Ph.D. Program

Ella Brown, Anthropology Biological Graduate Student, West Borneo, Indonesia

The Anthropology Department Ph.D. Program is a dynamic intellectual community formed by faculty and students in a mutual quest to understand the human condition in all its variety, past and present. The questions we explore are many. Some have persisted through over a century of anthropological inquiry, some have been refined or altered as a result of anthropological work, and some have emerged recently along with changing world conditions and new intellectual debates.

We know that you will find a lot to learn at Michigan and that you will make your own original contributions to anthropology — contributions that will be interesting and informative to your fellow anthropologists, faculty and students alike, as well as to yourselves — before you leave. We want your graduate experience to be an exciting adventure, and we will do our best to make it so.
