Jon Wells is Professor of History in the RC, DAAS, and History at the University of Michigan and the author of several books on nineteenth-century America, including, most recently, Blind no More: African American Resistance, Free-Soil Politics, and the Coming of the Civil War (2019) and The Kidnapping Club: Wall Street, Slavery, and Resistance on the Eve of the Civil War (2020). His next book is about the backlash against the Emancipation Proclamation in the Civil War North. He lives in Detroit with his wife, historian Heather Ann Thompson.
